Oh, Hey
Cryptic updates, and a request
Hi. It’s been a minute.
There’s a lot to report since I last published anything here, and I’m sorry to say this gestation period isn’t quite over. I’ve made it through the most disorienting and disquieting twelve months of my life (so far), moderately transformed, and tenuously reassembled. I need more time for my bones to set, but meanwhile, here’s some news, and a request.
At the end of last year, I decided to get out of the sauce game, and started shuttering Bobbie’s Boat Sauce. It was an easy decision to make, but a difficult one to carry out. In the midst of closing, I got struck with a bad case of burnout. Combined with the generalized anxiety of the moment, I found myself incapable of doing any kind of marketing, especially on social media.
At odds with this paralysis was a deep desire to tell the story Boat Sauce—of entrepreneurship, the rise and fall of a condiment and a dream, the shadow side of the image that needed to be projected. In my grandiose mind, it would live as a feature in Bon Appétit, but there was only one problem: I had to write the goddam thing.
Combining my social media paralysis and my baby-steps approach to writing, I started a new Substack. I have about 25 cases of Boat Sauce left to sell, and I’m going to try to write at least part of that groundbreaking editorial feat until I’m out. There’s also subscription levels for anyone who would like to support my mounting closing costs.
I hope you’ll follow along, and I’ll see you soon.
